Colne conceded three late goals in a dramatic finish to their game against South Liverpool at the Haffners Stadium on Saturday. The Reds had looked comfortable with a two goal lead at half time and looked on course for another three points over the Christmas period but were rocked by a resurgent South Liverpool in the last 15 minutes.
Colne took the lead after only eight minutes when Jack Holt burst clear and slotted the ball past the advancing keeper in an ideal opening for the Reds. After 27 minutes, a Colne free kick high into the visitors penalty area was knocked down by Shak Ali and fired low into the net by Connor High to double the Reds lead.
Two minutes later, Colne debutant Miles Storey broke clear of the visitors defence but Liverpool keeper Lucas Allan got down well to block his shot in a one-on-one. At the other end, South Liverpool won a free kick in a dangerous position 25 yards out and Owen Hough curled a shot against the post of the Colne goal before Harry Turner made a good save to keep out the follow-up.
With half time approaching, Colne looked to increase their lead when Nathan Cliffe’s cross from the bye line was spilled by the keeper and Storey’s follow-up was blocked in the goalmouth.
The Reds started the second half on the attack and Cliffe saw his shot fly just past the far post after turning past a defender in the penalty area. And Matty Argent-Barnes lifted his shot high over the bar with a clear sight of goal in a subsequent attack. After 73 minutes Rio McEvoy’s through ball released Mo Butt into the visitors’ penalty area but he was denied by a desperate tackle by a defender in the goalmouth.
But Colne had a warning after 77 minutes when Alex Griffiths went clear at the other end and forced a great save from Turner to keep out his goal-bound shot. Five minutes later, the visitors pulled a goal back when Neil Weaver fired a 25 yard angled free kick low into the far corner of the Reds net.
Colne looked for a way to restore their two goal advantage with some good counterattacks but the final ball in each case was cut out by the visitors’ defence. And disaster struck again as the game went into added time when a corner kick fell into a crowd of players in the Colne goalmouth and was forced home by Sullivan Barker to level the scores at 2-2.
South Liverpool pressed forward in the five minutes of added time and Jacob Barratt scored the winner with a low shot at the near post following a corner to deny the Reds any reward.
