Mossley 0 - 2 Colne

Colne were back in action after a two week lay-off on Saturday and fought out a memorable win at Mossley. The Reds were pushed all the way by the home side but held on with some determined defending and replied with two well taken goals by Matty Morgan to clinch the points.

In the opening stages, it was Mossley who did most of the attacking but Colne defended well and when the home side did get a sight of goal, their finishing was wayward.

As Colne came more into the game, Paul Dugdale’s cross from the left wing provided a half chance for Dean Ing in front of goal but his challenge on the defender was too robust for the referee. And in a subsequent attack, Morgan’s cross was turned just wide of the far post by Ing with another strong finish.

At the other end, Matty Makinson made good headed clearances from the Colne goalmouth and after 22 minutes, Colne keeper Hakan Burton made a great one-handed save to keep out a goal-bound shot by Mason Fawns.

As Mossley pressed forward with more attacks, the Colne defence came under pressure with Lee Pugh and Harry Winstanley making vital clearances and efforts by Harry Pratt and Jordan Butterworth flew just over the Reds crossbar.

On the stroke of half time, it was Colne on the attack and Morgan cut inside from the left wing and found the far corner of the net with a superb firmly struck curling shot to give the Reds the lead at the interval.

As the second half began, Mossley pushed forward looking for an equaliser and Burton needed to produce a good save to keep out a low shot by Pratt at the expense of a corner. And within minutes, he was in action again with a fingertip save to push Jack Bannister’s shot round the post. On the hour, Mossley captain Andy Keogh looked to be about to score but his shot was cleared off the line by a resolute Colne defence.

But the Reds came more into the game as an attacking force as they played their way out of defence and through the midfield with Charlie Russell and Oli Roberts working to build some good attacks. And Cameron Gourley making his debut on the right looked a quality player with some nice touches and good tackles.

Mossley came close after 76 minutes when Bailey Marsden’s low diagonal ball into the Reds crowded goalmouth looked destined for the net but Burton anticipated well and got down to save on the line at the far post. And after 84 minutes, Devon Matthews saw his shot deflected over the Colne goal in another dangerous attack by the home side.

In the closing minutes, Colne looked to hit back on the break with some end-to-end moves and Reece Webb-Foster had two great chances but curled the first one just over the bar and was denied by the keeper in a one-on-one on the second occasion. But deep into injury time, Morgan seized upon a poor clearance by the Mossley defence and rifled a 25 yard shot into the top corner of the net to seal a 2-0 win for the Reds.
